🎡 From Horses to Hybrid Cars: How the Sonoma County Fair Has Changed in 100 Years

Walking through the Sonoma County Fairgrounds today with the scent of funnel cake in the air, kids squealing on carnival rides, and crowds enjoying local wines and concerts, it’s easy to forget that this event has been part of our community for over a century.

But 100 years ago, the fair looked very different. Here's how:

🐴 Then: A Showcase of Agriculture

In the early 20th century, the fair was a true agricultural exposition. Farmers brought livestock, crops, and produce to show off their skills and innovations. It was less entertainment and more education, a way for rural communities to connect, compete, and collaborate.

Now: While ag still plays a role, it’s been joined by wine tastings, food trucks, and live music. The fair now blends our agricultural roots with lifestyle and culture, drawing locals and visitors alike.

🛢️ Then: Horses, Tractors, and Butter-Making

100 years ago, the excitement might’ve been a horse pulling competition, a butter-churning contest, or a tractor parade. Families came to see the latest milking equipment or seed varieties.

Now: You’re more likely to see drifting exhibitions, electric cars, and robotics displays alongside classic tractor shows and 4-H competitions. It’s rural meets high-tech.

🎟️ Then: Community Gathering

The fair was a major social event.  A time when neighbors gathered after harvests or long stretches of farm work. People dressed up for the occasion, and news of the fair made front-page headlines.

Now: It’s still a community hub, but more casual and diverse. Families come in shorts and sneakers, snapping selfies in front of art installations and entering raffles via QR code.

🍓 Then: Homegrown, Homemade

Most of the food was made by local families, churches, or community groups. Think pies, jams, and barbecued meats cooked on open pits.

Now: Local vendors still play a role, but they’re joined by gourmet food trucks, vegan options, and craft beer and wine tasting pavilions, Sonoma style!

🎠 Then vs. Now: The Spirit Remains

What hasn’t changed? The fair is still about celebrating our community, our land, our people, and the traditions that make Sonoma County special.

It might look different, but at its heart, the fair is still where kids make memories, neighbors reconnect, and we all remember why we love living here.
