After several weeks traveling through Spain, France and Italy, Tom and I came home with wonderful memories, plenty of stories, and a renewed appreciation for something I seem to rediscover every time we travel: there really is no place quite like home.

We were fortunate to experience some extraordinary places. Beautiful old cities, charming villages, waterfront towns, incredible architecture, long walks, wonderful meals and moments that will stay with us for a very long time. Travel has always been something Tom and I love, and I think one of the reasons is that it changes your perspective.

You notice things differently when you come home.

And coming back to Healdsburg in September makes that especially easy.

The mornings are beginning to feel a little cooler. The vineyards are full and beautiful. There is a different light in the evenings. The Plaza is still lively, but summer vacation season is beginning to give way to routines, school schedules and everyday life again.

It is one of my favorite times of year here.

Maybe that is part of what makes Healdsburg so special. It isn't just a wonderful place to visit. It is a wonderful place to come home to.

We have beautiful restaurants, shops and gathering places, but we also have neighborhoods where people know one another, familiar faces around town and a community that still feels personal. You can have dinner on the Plaza one evening and be home in your own backyard under the stars shortly afterward.

That combination is difficult to duplicate.

Travel Has a Way of Clarifying What Matters

Whenever we travel, I find myself paying attention to homes.

I notice courtyards, gardens, windows, balconies, kitchens and the way people use outdoor space. I look at neighborhoods and wonder what it would feel like to actually live there rather than simply visit.

Occupational hazard, perhaps.

But it also reminds me that the best homes are about much more than square footage and finishes.

They are about how you live.

Can friends gather comfortably around the kitchen?

Is there a place to sit outside with a cup of coffee in the morning?

Can the grandchildren run through the yard?

Is there somewhere quiet to retreat at the end of the day?

Does the neighborhood make you want to take a walk?

Those are the things buyers ultimately respond to, even when they don't realize it immediately.

They are buying a life as much as they are buying a house.

September Brings Real Estate Back Into Focus

September also brings a noticeable change in the rhythm of real estate.

Summer can be wonderfully busy socially, but people travel. Schedules become unpredictable. Buyers disappear for a few weeks and sellers sometimes wonder where everyone went.

Then September arrives.

People come home.

Schedules normalize.

Buyers who have been watching the market begin paying closer attention again. Families start thinking about where they want to be next year. Sellers who have been considering a move begin asking whether they should make their move now or wait until spring.

For properties already on the market, this can also be an important moment to reassess.

Does the home still feel fresh to buyers?

Is the pricing positioned correctly for today's market?

Is the marketing telling the right story?

Sometimes the beginning of a new season is exactly the right time to look at a property with fresh eyes.

And Then There Is Healdsburg and Sonoma County

I have spent a great deal of my career helping people buy and sell homes here, yet I still find myself appreciating Sonoma County from both sides—as a real estate professional and as someone who simply loves living here.

When I travel, I am reminded how lucky we are to have so much right outside our door.

Beautiful countryside.

Walkable downtowns.

Wonderful restaurants and small businesses.

Outdoor living much of the year.

And a community that somehow manages to feel sophisticated and comfortable at the same time.

Perhaps that is why so many people arrive here for a weekend and eventually begin asking a very different question:

What would it be like to live here?

That question has started more real-estate conversations than I can count.

And September may be one of the best months to understand the answer.

After a couple of weeks away, I am happy to be home, back to work, back to our routines and back to the community we love.

Travel always gives me a greater appreciation for the world.

But coming home to Healdsburg reminds me why we chose this little corner of it.
